Nov 10 - British officials track almost 30 terror plots

Almost 30 terrorist plots involving more than 1,600 individuals are being tracked by British authorities, the head of Britain's MI5 spy agency said in a speech released Friday.

Many of the suspects are homegrown British terrorist who are plotting suicide attacks and other mass-casualty bombings, said Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller.

Since the July 2005 London transit bomb attacks, MI5 has spoiled five major terrorist plots, reported Manningham-Buller.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair backed his spy chief's assessment and said the threat "will last a generation."

On Thursday, Manningham-Buller brought the same message to a small group of academics in London.

We are "aware of numerous plots to kill people and to damage our economy," she said. "What do I mean by numerous? Five Ten? No, it's nearer to 30 that we currently know of."

She said MI5 knows of about 200 cells, involving more than 1,600 people, which are "actively engaged in plotting or facilitating terrorist acts here and overseas."

The threat involves "resilient networks, some directed from al Qaeda in Pakistan, some more loosely inspired by it, planning attacks including mass casualty suicide attacks in the U.K."

The comments are the first public estimate to be made by the head of MI5.

"Britons aren't openly jittery but I think there is a subtle nervousness," CTV's London Bureau Chief Tom Kennedy said Friday.

Manningham-Buller said the radicalization, especially among young people, is a huge problem in the battle against terrorism.

"It is the youth who are being actively targeted, groomed, radicalized and set on a path that frighteningly quickly could end in their involvement in mass murder of their fellow U.K. citizens,'' she said. "Young teenagers are being groomed to be suicide bombers.''

On July 7, 2005, 52 people were killed when four suicide bombers attacked three subway trains and a bus in London. Three of the four bombers were born in Britain.

In August 2006, British officials foiled an alleged plot by a British terrorist cell to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners in mid-flight. More than a dozen British suspects are awaiting trial.

On Tuesday, Dhiren Barot, a British Muslim convert, was sentenced to life in prison for planning to blow up U.S. financial landmarks and London targets.

A spokesperson for the Muslim Council of Britain, Inayat Bunglawala, called the statistics "a very sober warning." However, he said that is was necessary that "British Muslims are seen as a partner in the fight against terrorism and not some sort of community in need of mass medication."

Bill Durodie, senior lecturer in risk and security at the U.K. Defence Academy, said releasing the statistics may exaggerate the terrorist threat facing Britain.

"It's easy to pull out alarmist headlines," said Durodie. "What we're seeing here on a whole are lone individuals (and) small groups."

Nov 10 - US students sue over Borat film

Two US students are suing a film studio claiming they were duped into appearing in spoof movie Borat starring Sacha Baron Cohen as a Kazakh journalist.

The unknown plaintiffs are seen making sexist and racist remarks in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Legal papers said the two men "engaged in behaviour that they otherwise would not have engaged in."

20th Century Fox spokesman Gregg Brilliant said the case "has no merit".

The men are identified in the film as two fraternity members from a South Carolina university.

'Humiliation'

They are not named in the case "to protect themselves from any additional and unnecessary embarrassment".

According to legal documents, a production crew took the pair to a bar to drink and "loosen up" before taking part in a documentary they were told would be shown outside the US.

The film "made plaintiffs the object of ridicule, humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress, loss of reputation, goodwill and standing in the community," the papers stated.

British comedian Cohen appears in the film as an apparently naive reporter whose enthusiastic offensiveness either leaves his US interviewees in shock, or persuades them to reveal a little too much of their own prejudices.

As well as Fox, the two men are also suing three other production companies.

The film is currently at the top of the box office charts in North America and the UK.

Deep Fried Pizza. WTF

Yes, that's right. Deep-fried pizza, long the exclusive domain of the Scots, has landed Stateside. Slice noticed it on the menu of the Atlantic ChipShop a little over a month ago. After some pestering on our part, chippie owner Chris Sell allowed me and Matt Jacobs into his kitchen to film the process. Matt shot the footage above while ChipShop kitchen manager Randy Carpenter fried up a couple slices for us.

Deep-fried slices at the Brooklyn Heights restaurant are $3 each and begin their lives as plain pies from My Little Pizzeria on Court Street in Downtown Brooklyn.

The pizza is refrigerated first because, as Mr. Carpenter points out, if it's fresh and the cheese is already melted, it won't hold the batter.

Cool slices are dredged in flour then dipped in batter before taking a 2- to 3-minute dip in a bath of 500-degree oil.

A bright-yellow battered slice is dropped into the deep-fryer, dives below the surface for just a moment, and resurfaces with a light-golden tint. The oil around it hisses and bubbles while the shell puffs up noticeably. After a minute or so on one side, Mr. Carpenter flips the slice with a shallow wire strainer and weights it down with a large fryer basket so it cooks evenly.

Cooking time is only as long as it takes for the batter to "brown out," achieving a dark golden color.

People will deep fry anything, I guess the next thing will be deep fried strawberries.

Kid Gets Beaten Up For Buying Gears Of War

Kid Gets Beaten Up For Buying Gears Of War
Detroit, Michigan- A teen patron attempting to purchase a copy of Microsoft's eagerly awaited, "Gears of War" was assaulted while waiting in line at a local Gamestop Video Game store. The 15 year-old was beaten by a 36 year-old waiting in line, also. Apparently, an argument ensued after the cashier claimed there were no more copies available. The 36 year-old named "Deion" started yelling and tried to cut in line in an attempt to purchase the last copy and a brawl started. The older customer sent a barrage of fists and harsh language at the younger patron. The police were then called. "Deion" was arrested for aggravated assault and is currently awaiting arraignment at a local correctional facility. The 15 year-old was taken to a local hospital for several wounds to the head and neck. The final copy of the game is being held as evidence. More at the website
