Celebrity socialite Paris Hilton has been charged with drunk driving following her arrest in Hollywood earlier this month, city justice officials said.
The 25-year-old heiress to the Hilton hotel empire will be arraigned on charges of misdemeanour drunk driving on Thursday in connection with her headline-making arrest on September 6, Los Angeles city attorney's office said.
Hilton was hauled over by motorcycle cops after being spotted "driving erratically" near her home, police said.
The party-loving platinum blonde insisted she had enjoyed just "one margarita" and had not eaten during a day at work promoting her new album and attending receptions.
She was taken into custody at Hollywood police station and later released after failing a roadside breathtest. California outlaws driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.8 percent or more.
Hilton will be arraigned at Los Angeles' Metropolitan Branch Court House on Thursday September 28 but will not be required to attend the hearing.
The maximum penalty under California law for misdemeanour drunk driving is six months jail and a $1300 fine but officials indicated it was unlikely Hilton would face such stiff punishment for a first offence.
"If the judge decided to throw the book at her she could technically get a jail sentence but that's not very common for a first offence," a spokesman for LA city attorney's office said.
Instead she could be forced to attend an alcohol education program and lose her driving licence.
