Homemade suicide guillotine

A MAN killed himself by ramming a carving knife into his skull with a homemade ‘guillotine’.

He rigged up a bizarre contraption to drop the knife down a 25ft drainpipe and into his brain.

The unnamed man tied the plastic drainpipe to an electricity pylon and suspended the knife from the top of the pipe with a rope.

Then he sat below the drainpipe and let go of the rope, sending the heavy knife plunging through his skull.

Police called to the scene on Tuesday morning, near a park-and-ride in Botley, Oxon, at first thought they were dealing with a murder.

A Thames Valley Police source said: “It is one of the most elaborate and bizarre suicides we have dealt with.

“It must have been an incredibly painful death.”

Detectives found no identifying papers on the body and have been unable to match him with any missing person.

A police spokesman said: “We have no idea who this man was. He was in his early to mid-twenties and he was fully clothed.

“He was white, slim and about 5ft 11ins tall. He had brown to auburn short hair and light-coloured eyes. If anyone recognises this description of a missing person, please call us.”

A post-mortem examination revealed that the man died as a result of his head injury.

Engineers from the National Grid detached the drainpipe from the electricity pylon
